1* Free Pick on Braves/Diamondbacks: under 9½
This total is sitting at least a half-run too high for an early-season matchup in the desert.
Hitters are still finding their timing in the first week of April. Pitchers are almost always ahead of the bats during this stretch of the calendar.
The Braves bring one of the most dominant rotations in baseball to Chase Field. Their starters focus on high strikeout rates and limited walks to keep runners off the bases.
Arizona counters with a pitching staff that excels at inducing soft contact. They won't give up the big inning that usually pushes a game over a high total like 9.5.
Chase Field is known for offense, but that usually happens when the Arizona heat is cranking in the summer. The ball does not travel nearly as well in the cooler desert air of early April.
Both bullpens are fresh and have their primary high-leverage arms available for this series opener. Atlanta’s relief unit finished last season near the top of the league in FIP and Expected ERA.
The Diamondbacks' bullpen has been revamped to focus on efficiency and ground balls. They have the right pieces to shut down the Braves' power hitters in the late innings.
Atlanta can put up runs, but they also swing and miss a lot early in the season. Arizona relies on manufacturing runs with speed rather than home runs, which burns more clock and limits scoring bursts.
The statistical trends show these two teams stay under the total frequently when facing elite non-divisional opponents. We are looking at a classic 5-2 or 4-3 type of game tonight.
There is too much pitching talent on the mound to expect double-digit runs in this spot. Take the cushion with the hook and back the arms.
I like the Under 9.5 (-120).

The Angle(s): The Colorado Rockies are 5-1 to the under so far this season, but this is their first game back at home at Coors Field, the ultimate hitter's park in Major League Baseball. Rockies righty Michael Lorenzen makes his first home start with Colorado, but he's got a brutal 15.95 ERA as a visitor at Coors. Phillies righty Aaron Nola didn't look sharp in his season debut, and has a 4.03 ERA in six career starts at Colorado.
The Bet: OVER (3%).
