Kansas' offense wasn't as good after losing him, and head coach Lance Leipold is glad to have him back. He actually called this the most complete offense he's ever had in his six seasons at Kansas.That's big praise considering this Kansas offense was elite under Kotelnicki in 2023 and 2024. In fact, Kansas scored 35.6 points per game in 2023 and 34.8 points per game in 2024. The offensive line has 10 different guys he is comfortable starting, including future NFL'er Calvin Clements at LT.Kansas beat Long Island 51-6 in the opener behind 613 total yards and 8.1 yards per play. The next great Kansas QB is sophomore Isaiah Marshall, who threw for 246 yards and 2 TD, while also rushing for 49 yards on seven carries. Syracuse transfer Yasin Willis rushed for 72 yards and two scores on 11 carries. Buffalo transfer Nik McMillan had 6 receptions for 130 yards and a score. Leipold did well in the transfer portal replacing his skill position players.One of the most underrated transfer gets in the offseason was Missouri nabbing Austin Simmons from Ole Miss. Simmons was the starter at Ole Miss last season before getting injured, and Trinidad Chambliss took the job and never let go of it, leading the Rebels all the way to the semifinals. Many believe that Chambliss is the best QB in the country.The point is Simmons beat out Chambliss for the starting job and only lost it due to injury, not performance. Simmons himself is one of the best QB's in the country. He went 17-of-19 passing for 252 yards and 4 TD in his Missouri debut, a 54-14 beat down of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Missouri led 40-0 at halftime before calling off the dogs and sitting Simmons.Missouri looks much better off offensively this season than it does defensively. The Tigers brought back six starters on offense and added three more in the transfer portal for a total of nine. They even got WR Cayden Lee to come along with Simmons from Ole Miss. He had 1,509 receiving yards the last two seasons at Ole Miss. I know Missouri will be without arguably the best RB in the country in Ahmad Hardy after a shooting accident in the offseason. He's close to returning. But his backup in Jamal Roberts is a stud as well, rushing for 753 yards and 6 TD with 6.1 per carry last season.This Missouri defense looks like the worst unit that Eliah Drinkwitz has had since at least 2021. Missouri returns just two starts and two of its top 15 tacklers from a year ago. The Tigers only added one starter in the transfer portal on D, too. It wasn't the best sign giving up two touchdowns to Pine Bluff last week. Kansas never has an elite defense allowing 26.0 points per game or more in each of Leipold's first five seasons. This will be a below average unit again. That's especially the case for this game with starting LB Bam Crouch doubtful. He made 17 starts at Boston College and had 89 tackles before transferring here. The Jayhawks have four new starters along the D-Line and Missouri's O-Line will dominate.Last year, Missouri beat Kansas 42-31 for a whopping 73 combined points. The Tigers racked up 595 total yards in the win. And that was a Missouri offense that wasn't as potent as this year's unit. Missouri will be able to hang a big number on Kansas, and I think the Jayhawks are capable of matching them score for score again.
