Red Sox Predictions
Another solid team, our 2007 Boston Red Sox predictions show a
return to the team that had the talent to win the World Series a couple years
ago, and not the squad that missed the playoffs, finishing 3rd in the American
League East, a season ago. This team is another fan favorite who is
expected to win 91 games this season. Due to the team being such a
favorite we think this number is inflated and we are going with the under.

The team's third place finish was the worst finish since 1997
so Boston went out and spent over $100 million to ensure that
the same won't happen again this year. The number one
addition was Dice-K, Daisuke Matsuzaka. He is looking
good in spring training and by all reports appears to be the
real deal. Even other Japanese imports seem to have one
good season in them before getting figured out, so hopefully
for Red Sox fans they will at least get that out of their top
addition to the rotation. JD Drew and Julio Lugo were
the guys added to help the lineup, and both of them should be
minor upgrades to what the team had last season.
This pitching staff has the potential to be the best in the
business with Dice-K, Curt Schilling, Josh Beckett, Jonathan
Papelbon, and Tim Wakefield. Now Papelbon is possibly
slated to go back to the closer role with injuries in the
bullpen so that could hurt the depth of the rotation. If
he remains in the rotation then this is the best four starters
in the bigs. Who is going to be the ace of this staff?
You have three legit guys with Dice-K, Beckett, and Schilling
as long as they all stay healthy. Papelbon was great
last year in the bullpen, so if he can keep it up throwing
more innings he might be the sleeper of the squad. Matt
Clement is also there but he hasn't really thrown well in a
Red Sox uniform.
The bullpen has a lot of depth with Donnelly, Romero, and
Piniero. There is a lot of innings that could be logged
and they will be quality ones. In order to get to the
top of the division though someone is going to have to step up
as a real shutdown guy to close the games. Mike Timlin
is supposed to be the closer but injuries are keeping him from
starting the season in the role.
Boston will have plenty of firepower with Drew, Manny Ramirez,
and David Ortiz. It would have been nice to see a little
more firepower added to help Ortiz get a few more pitches, but
this lineup is still going to get a lot of runs cross the
plate. Jason Varitek is a better than average catcher,
Lowell hits for a good average, Hinske has a lot of upside and
potential, and the rest of the infield is built more for
defense than it is for their prowess with the bat.
In the outfield the team has speed with Coco Crisp and power
with Wily Mo Pena, Hinske, Drew, and Ramirez.
