2006 New York Mets Predictions
When we
released the 2006 New York Mets predictions we kept an eye on
recent history. The Mets are not a safe bet. In fact, they have lost their supporters
54 units the past 4 years. You should look for ideal situations to
profit on the Mets by betting against them, especially as a road
favorite. Because the Mets play in the big Market of New York City they
constantly get overvalued despite how terrible they are. The fact that
they have spent as much money as they have over the last two seasons
will only raise the expectations and thus make it more difficult to
profit off of this team. You should look to pounce on opportunities
when they get overvalued as a favorite on the road as they are a
pathetic 22-27 over the past 2 years as a road favorite. Due to the
expectations and that they are from New York, there is going to be a lot
of money bet on the Mets this season. With that being said they are
going to see some inflated numbers and will have more than a few chances
to go against them. If you take advantage you can make a lot of money
going against this team.

One
exception to keep in mind might be if Pedro Martinez is toeing the mound
as he gives the Mets a great chance to win every 5 games. The rest of
the staff, future Hall-of-Fame candidate Tom Glavine included, isn’t
consistent enough to even consider backing. We aren’t real sure how the
rest of the staff is going to be panning out, but plan on Steve Trachsel
and Victor Zambrano to get some starts; both have had problems keeping
up steady wins in the past. They did pick up a solid closer in Billy
Wagner who picked up 38 saves and a 1.51 ERA in Philly last season.
The Mets will hope for a much better season out of their big money man
Carlos Beltran. He looked nothing like the player he was in Kansas City
and Houston in 2005 as he totaled just 16 homeruns and batted only .266.
The Mets will need another MVP caliber season out of Beltran if they
hope to finish better than just 2 games out of last place in the NL
East. Lo Duca takes over for Piazza behind the plate which should help
both with batting average and throwing runners out who try to steal on
this team. David Wright has become a really solid option at third base
and will become a superstar by the end of this season. Carlos Delgado
and Cliff Floyd can pack a lot of punch and drive a lot of runs across
the plate, especially if lead off man Jose Reyes continues to get on
base and move around the base paths with the ease he showed last season.
Willie Randolph did a
good job of getting this team back on track in 2005, but they are going
to have to keep making strides if all of the money that has been spent
is going to pay off. The expectations are high and nothing less than a
division title will suffice. The Atlanta Braves have won 14 straight
division titles and the other team from New York wants nothing more than
to unseat them and get back on top.
