2006 Chicago White Sox
Predictions
Our
2006 Chicago White Sox predictions rely on the fact that last season
they excelled in every facet of the game and
were really a joy to watch. But if it weren’t for the Cleveland Indians
sneaking up on them late in the year when it looked like complacency was
setting in, the White Sox may never have captured a World Series ring.
They continued a streak of ending curses, following the Red Sox’s
86-year World Series drought by winning their first title in 88 years.

If you were a South Side backer last season, you probably enjoyed a nice
vacation off of your winnings as the Sox posted an impressive 99-63
regular season record winning their backers 22 huge units.
One interesting thing to note when looking at last year’s team was their
apparent struggle with left-handed pitching as opposed to right-handed
pitching. Despite a solid right handed batting lineup, led by slugger
Paul Konerko, the White Sox were just 23-21 against lefties on the
season. Look for the 2006 White Sox to once again destroy righties as
they are a positive 43 units over the last 2 seasons against right
handed pitching and it should even improve this season with addition of
left-handed slugger Jim Thome. Thome going along with Paul Konerko is
going to provide a mean 1-2 punch to be reckoned with. Joe Crede and
Jermaine Dye will most likely get lost in the discussions of this
lineup, but they will also scare pitchers who will have to pitch to them
due to the other forces in the order.
It will be important to feel out the 2006 White Sox before laying on
them consistently. Their biggest plus is great starting pitching, and
they have a rising star closer in Bobby Jenks as well. They boast the
best starting rotation in baseball with Buehrle, Contreras, Garcia,
Garland, and Vasquez. Any one of these guys can be an ace on more than
half of the other teams in the major leagues. Garland was last year’s
surprise when he started out of the gates mowing down the competition
and picking up wins. Last year’s post-season when these horses threw
complete game after complete game showed just how important it was to
take pressure off of the rest of the team. They also have Brandon
McCarthy in the bullpen who is a starter than can come in and do some
damage if any of the big 5 go down due to injury. The bullpen is
definite bonus for this team as well with Dustin Hermanson’s 34 saves
and 2.04 ERA in store after ending last year with back problems.
This
team is most likely better than the team that won last year’s World
Series, but two straight years have shown how important it is to get hot
at the right time. If the playoffs had started two weeks earlier last
year then this team could have been swept in the first round with the
way they were closing out the season. They will be battling a tough
Cleveland Indians squad in the Central, but with this staff they should
have too much fire power to not overcome their closest contender. Watch
to see if the South Siders to continue to struggle with south paws. If
they do, going against them versus lefties and with them versus righties
could be a great recipe for success in 2006.
